What is Leadership Coaching?

Most leaders have all the technical excellence, knowledge and resources to be successful which is why they rose to the positions they are in. But yet they get to a point where they are unable to make the difference they need or want. Additional training is usually not the answer since they are already the technical experts in their field. The missing piece is something more personal. Often it is how they are interacting with others and /or how they are perceived. The key is how they can be more effective by connecting with others. Human behavior is not what most leaders focus on. Their focus is on results. Yet, a leader’s ability to connect with others determines their ultimate effectiveness. Enter the leadership coach.

Leadership coaching is a developmental process for leaders that combines human interaction with the strength of their technical skills. The coach’s role is to help leaders identify and remove the obstacles that are getting in their way. This is achieved through meaningful questions and intense listening. The coach revisits the world of the leader with compassion and honesty to identify where they get stuck, where history repeats itself, and where pivoting would make the difference to unlock old patterns. Through this process new patterns can emerge clearing the way to a more successful world.

Coaches don’t solve leadership problems. Instead they guide the leader to find the right solution for them in an authentic, honest way. The result is clarity of the change they have determined, and a new path lined with positive reinforcement and renewed excitement for their leadership style and capabilities.

Leadership Coaching is a developmental process where a leader gets confidential, honest, and customized help from a coach to help them become a more effective leader.

Leadership Skills

Coaching and Staff Development

The best leaders support their people by investing in them. Their people typically characterize them as the best they’ve ever worked for and made them feel valuable as a team member while giving them direct, tough and candid feedback. These leaders invested in their development and coached them to the next level.

Communication

Someone who can communicate can:
  • Listen intently while being present
  • Understand body language and nonverbal signs
  • Manage their tone and inflection
  • Speak clearly, succinctly, and specifically

Creativity

Creativity in a leader requires an ability to see others and situations through different angles or lenses. Creative leaders can:
  • Think critically and under pressure
  • Solve problems in an open environment
  • Brainstorm with all levels of staff
  • Make necessary connections to obtain any missing information

Decision Making

Top leaders know that some days their decisions are easy, no-brainers while others are politically charged and downright unpopular. In all cases, these leaders can be counted on to quickly and confidently make decisions that serve the interests of everyone. The common denominator is that these decisions are well informed, confident, and selfless.

Teamwork

Leaders bring out the best in a group and creating an environment where each individual team member is valued, feels free to share and can create something great while working together. These team-oriented leaders are:
  • Collaborative
  • Group-Oriented
  • Social
  • Open and honest
Great leaders have an ability to keep their egos in check while serving the greater good of their teams. They also understand the importance of work-life balance in feeding the souls of their team.

Leadership Qualities

01. Accountability

The number one goal of any new leader is to be respected. I coach new leaders that being liked is an added plus but respect is non-negotiable. Accountability occurs when leaders are great at communicating clearly about what needs to be accomplished, by whom, and how progress is being measured against those goals. If a team member misses their goals they get honest, candid, and timely feedback with a collaborative discussion about what was learned and what to do differently next time. The message spreads that accountable is a real thing that is equally held by all. When others see that they are not being brought down by underperformers, they know the expectation is what was communicated–hitting their targets and that their work is noticed and valued.

02. Authenticity

Leadership starts to rocket when you lose predisposed thoughts about who you should be and instead show up as who you are. Others always know when a fake is in the house and they rebel when they see who you really are. This is hardest quality I coach on because it requires a leader to be vulnerable. However, vulnerability is true strength. So better to “Go Be You” and maintain your true brand than some phony style people can see through. It also gives your team permission to do the same.

03. Mindfulness

Leaders can be impulsive and reactive when pressures occur or they can rise above it by finding the silver lining. In addition, the best mindful leaders are fully present, kind and compassionate, and selfless while being confident. This combination of mindfulness creates the highest level of engagement, loyalty, and happiness among their teams which all translate to the lowest turnover.

04. Courage/Fearlessness/Drive to succeed

Leaders are not status quo individuals. They seek something greater than what is currently present and know they can make a difference regardless of the challenge.

The key is knowing what risks are worth taking and being fearless when needed.

05. Change Management/Adaptability

Change management entails helping others to let go of what was legacy, and adapt to the new normal required to progress forward. Change is hard but good leaders are excellent in understanding the resistance and even better in inspiring others to make the change by leading by example or steering towards the new course.

06. Patience and persistence

Leaders know that nothing goes according to plans but they can persist over the long term. The key is staying on top of everything, knowing when a rest is needed and when the next big push is needed. It is a careful ebb and flow that good leaders know how to navigate through without losing faith.

07. Strategic Thinking

Great leaders stay very current within their industry and market. They ask the right questions, watch market changes and see the bigger picture. They also take the time regularly to strategically think and replan their business.

08. Motivation/Inspiration

It has been proven that we are the product of the people we most surround ourselves with. These people can expand us or contract us. Being a good leader entails being that inspirational and motivational person who encourages others to follow their passion and beliefs regardless of what crosses their path.

09. Humor

Never underestimate the power of humor in the workplace. Everyone needs a release and the ability to laugh. As a leader, the ability to laugh at yourself generates authenticity and shows others the strength in just being real. Obviously, humor needs to take place respectfully and at appropriate times. But, when it does, it binds a team together with the best glue.
